Life On The Road

Updated: Jul 13, 2022

As you may know by now, I live full time in a trailer while we travel around for work. My boyfriend, Grayson, is an apprentice lineman. This means that we are getting uprooted every 3-6 months with little to no notice about if, when, or where we can be going until a couple of days before we have to be there. We started his apprenticeship in North Dakota. We were there for about 5 months. We then got sent to Sterling, CO for a few more months, then Greeley, CO which is when we made the switch to a different company. We were sent to Golden, CO for 6 months and in February we were sent back to Greeley where we have been for the last few months. I launched Piece of Heaven Photos in January of 2022 and we were sent to Greeley in February. Since moving to Greeley, I have gained a very small clientele but clientele none the less. This is still very intimidating to me and will probably continue to be. See, I’m very introverted and putting myself out there is very difficult; however, I now have a reason to work past that! I join *countless* Facebook groups local to where we’re at and be an annoying pest trying to get some business. My family and friends probably get beyond annoyed asking if they know anyone where we are at lol, but hey you do watcha gotta do! I have to plan days in advance for trips back home to schedule sessions for everyone who has been asking my mom when we will be coming home lol. But I put in the effort and make it work. Yes, it is beyond stressful but SO, SO, SO rewarding. Let me be the first to tell you, starting a business on the road is HARD, but it is not impossible. It just takes a little extra work.

My first clients were actually a couple that worked in the office and for maintenance at an RV park we were living at, at the time. In the middle of a conversation with the wife, I brought up the fact that I was trying to build up a portfolio in order to display to you all, and if they would be interested, that I would love to provide them with pictures. To my surprise, this was the first pictures they’ve ever had taken of them in the 18 years that they’ve been together! I am so, so, so thankful that they put their trust into me and gave me a chance!

We are typically in areas where there are a lot of unfamiliar faces and our loved ones and friends are back home anywhere from 8-18 hours away from us. IT SUCKS! There is no sugar coating that. I have the biggest support system and would have hundred of clients if we were closer to home or in our hometown, but that isn’t the case and it is just part of this lifestyle. It is very hard to turn down clients months in advance because I just don’t know if we will be in the area. For example, I just had a friend of a couple reach out to me to try to set up a surprise engagement session but had to turn it down because we will possibly hitting the road very soon. As I’m navigating this, I am realizing that I have to block out the entire month of estimated rotation time and the last week before the upcoming months. Which also SUCKS big time because these people love my work and want me to photograph these moments but I have to turn them down. That being said, please, please, please be patient with me and try to understand that there is a chance we might not be able to do your session, or we will have to schedule way earlier than what you were intending because of this. It is just as disappointing and frustrating for you as it is for me.

That being said, if you have read this far THANK YOU a million times for being supportive, understanding, patient and offering me grace and if you choose to allow to me capture your special moments, YOU are the reason I do what I do.
